Tashi InfoComm, a Bhutan-based GSM services provider, has introduced its voice and SMS services in the country. The launch marks the end of the monopoly of Bhutan Telecom. Tashi was awarded the second GSM license in 2006. Although initially the company had problems generating capital for its network, a consortium of financial institutions comprising National Pension and Provident Fund, Bank of Bhutan, and Bhutan National Bank came to its rescue. The company also announced that it is in the process of setting up around 38 towers that will allow it to offer its services in six regions in West Bhutan.
